Hi, my name is Ellen Read, and I live in Newmarket. I am proud to represent Rockingham District 17 as your newly-elected state representative.
My husband and I moved to Newmarket seven years ago with our dog and three cats, and we fell in love with the area. I received my master’s degree at UNH in environmental and socioeconomic justice, and worked as an organizer/manager at local nonpartisan non-profits on the issue of getting big money out of politics and restoring transparent and fair elections.
I’m running because I think everyone is ready for government that responds to the people, not big-money special interests. It starts with us.
Not everyone will agree with my ideas completely, but I believe passionately that candidates should be upfront and honest, and not give ambiguous politician-speak. If you choose to not vote for me, that’s ok – at least you made an informed choice.
My political agenda is all about People, Planet, and Principles:
People
- A fair, robust economy that works for everyone, not just a few
- Supporting and aiding small businesses
- Livable wage and worker’s rights
- Comprehensive healthcare as a human right
- An equally high-quality education for every student, & debt-free college options
Planet
- Protect NH’s pristine forests, waters, & mountains
- Move aggressively to renewable energy, efficiency standards, and reduced emissions
- Improve public transportation
- Strengthen NH’s small-agriculture foundation
Principles
- Transparency and fairness in government and elections, exposing the corrupting influence of moneyed interests
- Return to civil discourse and cooperation between parties, and strengthen the civic engagement of citizens, especially voting
- Defend equal constitutional, civil, and privacy rights for all—uphold the founding principle of ‘all liberties but those that deny another’s’ rights
- A fair, robust economy that works for everyone, not just a few
- Supporting and aiding small businesses
